The brief

Ginkgo Bioworks develops automation for biological research using modular Reconfigurable Automation Carts. The team brought us its initial brick-built prototype and asked us to develop it into an E15 RAC kit. The challenge was to show how separate carts connect into a working line, in a model small enough to explore by hand.

We developed the client’s initial brick prototype into a more compact kit with a roof that lifts off easily and an open interior without the robotic arm. The carts connect to each other, and miniature XPeel, HiG and PlateLoc instruments show how equipment fits into the setup. Opening the roof, arranging the instruments and connecting the carts make the modular logic something people can explore by building.

The custom box and booklet bring the laboratory product into a complete building experience. The instructions explain how to open the cart, arrange the instruments and connect units, keeping the product’s modular idea at the heart of the kit. When the shipment arrived in September 2023, Matt Youngblood told us the team loved the kits and thanked us for the work.
